Sophia Herzog is a Paralympic silver medalist, having placed second in the 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When Sophia was born, she was diagnosed with a form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia, a condition which affects 1 in 26,000 people. Sophia has always been an avid swimmer and was encouraged to pursue the national team by teammate Erin Poppovich. In 2015, Sophia made the team and at her first Para Pan Games, she won two silver medals and one bronze medal. Only two years later in 2017, Sophia won five medals at the World Championships, including two golds. Setting her sights on the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Sophia won gold medals in each of her seven events at last year’s Para Pan/Am Games.
